Good morning to you all
We have had some fresher mornings in the last little while and I find it a little surprising to experience this sort of weather so early in the year….I could expect fresh breezes like this towards the end of March at the change of the season….but not in January already…Mother Nature is really pushing my willpower and resilience to the limits….I have been starting my morning walks a little earlier, to attempt to crack the whip on the “battle of the bulge”….and there have already been a few mornings when I have poked my nose out of the door and given second thoughts to my exercise regime with the exercise winning thus far, but it has been close…. whilst on my walk I get to encounter our ever dedicated athletes on their morning run…one of the highlights of my walk….to hear the happy banter as they approach…and then get the chirps about “one day we will make you into a runner” cause me to chuckle at the suggestion …..but the laughter and happiness that these runners enjoy is something to behold…..so thank you Jan and your crew on supplying me with a morning smile…..
From all reports our contingent of runners that competed in the Johnson Crane marathon acquitted themselves admirably and enjoyed the cooler weather that was presented by Mother Nature for the day…. I heard of some devastatingly quick time in the shorter races for some of our runners, but these were not able to be confirmed officially at the time of writing…but this bodes well for the future….good luck to all our runners in their schedule to their quest of conquering the Comrades…there will still be a few hurdles to overcome before the big day…after Sunday it looks like our athletes have raised the bar significantly…marvellous stuff….
Our cricketers had another convincing win…to maintain their position at the summit of the league and now cannot be caught… we have 49 points, 6 ahead of CBC who are on 43…..both of these sides have completed their fixtures…with Alberton in third place on 38 points with a game in hand, which is against 4th placed Kempton…who are on 29 points….and still have another outstanding result from last weekend…if Kempton win both those remaining fixtures with a bonus point they can still end up in third place… we will have to wait until the close of play this weekend to find out who our opposition will be for the playoffs…. back to our performance for the weekend…Kurt Francis lost the toss….but I think we landed up doing what we wanted to anyway…and soon had Bedfordview in trouble…..but the real destroyer landed up being Leonard Killeen…who bowled 5.5 over had two maidens and grabbed a “fifer” for nine runs….and amazing feat….this resulted in Bedforview being rolled for 118 in just short of 38 overs…..with the target set…our batsmen climbed into their task with a vengeance…Vaughn getting back amongst the runs with a solid 47 off 59…..while we lost some wickets in the chase for quick runs…but eventually passing the total required in the 20th over….for the loss of three wickets…to record an impressive 7 wicket bonus point win….well done boys…enjoy this weekend off before you have to head off into the play offs….you deserve the break after a most impressive run in the new year….
Preseason rugby training is going well…please join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays…. we are offering 1st and 2nd’s, under 21 and ladies at senior level this year….a super improvement in depth over last year…and with us also having Junior rugby at the North for the first time…it is testament that the committee and players have been hard at work getting all their structures in place….a great tribute to Lourens and his committee…..congratulations on some wonderful work….
Senior soccer begin the start off their season this weekend with the Super 8 competition kicking off… we have a home fixture against Sporting on Saturday on the “C” field….the second side kicking off at 13h45…with the firsts following at 15h30….. please come along to witness the new talent that has joined us…together with the experienced players from last year it is an exciting prospect going forwards….
The interest in the Joker draw appears to be revitalised…with crowds starting to come through again Fridays…and this weekend with over R110 thousand available, we had no exception….the beeeeeg black box produced a new name… a football member, Dean Steyn was drawn out this week….and he looked a little bewildered at the prospect….as is with most of the winners selected…..we all buy a ticket…but never really expect to be drawn…..back to Dean…after a bit of contemplation he pointed to his selection…one line above centre on the extreme left….and this produced the hiding place of the two of spades….to another set of spontaneous applause and some loud singing and chanting from the football table accompanied the card turning over….much to Dean’s disappointment…..but the crowd again showed their appreciation that there was still a chance for them to participate next week…the Joker Jackpot now rises to R118520…. and we expect another great turnout for this week….we will also be having Karaoke to entertain us….so oil your vocal chords if you think you are the next idol in waiting…we will be starting from about 18h45 with the singing….19h00 for the club and raffle draws…19h20 the last Joker tickets are sold….while at 19h30 the draw for the Joker seeker will commence…after that Karaoke will continue trying to unearth the hidden talents at the North until late…. so please come down for a great way to celebrate the start of the weekend with us….
We are in the process of updating the North into a new era of technology….so keep an eye on this space…and keep the date of March 1 in your diary…for exciting new developments…
