Good morning to everyone
Up front….my apologies to everyone for the late submission from me and hence the late arrival of your favourite journal…filled with snippets of worthless information…much used cliches…and your usual helping of sarcastic wit, making it the first item to hit your computers trash with the speed of lightning….
Here goes…with the rain last week we had the hand in hand partner arrive shortly thereafter…the cooler weather…I have felt that this week…and I see all the runners and walkers that I pass in the gloomy pre-dawn attack….are all a little more warmly attired than last week…scarves, long sleeved vests and winter mittens are now a more regular occurrence than before…and I do not think it will be any warmer on those early mornings from now until the arrival of Spring….I now have seen our faithful leader Lockey and his companion Cedric each and every morning…but it is only once we pass each other and recognise each other by their voices that the hasty warm morning greetings follow…
Our runners have acquitted themselves with honour at both “om die dam” with a lot of runners completing their first ultra marathon….and then a huge round of applause and congratulations to all of our competitors at the Iron Man….I watched the video that Marc Daniel edited and produced…I got goose flesh watching the familiar faces from the North competing and completing this gruelling event….a massive rush for me….how wonderful the feeling must be for these incredible athletes….
Our Rugby players have started their third season at the North…and last weekend started off with a bang…their committee and back room boys had been very active and positive in their approach to the season…and it paid off huge dividends….with all three sides registering victories in the first league match of the season against Sasolburg…our U21’s…after conceding the first try of the day…ran out 27-18 winners….. the second side match followed and in similar fashion, allowed the opposition to score the first try of the game….but also worked a bit of magic and ran in with a convincing 17-7 result….the first side has not beaten their opposition in 8 years…..but our boys decided to completely turn the tables and it was really one way traffic as only one unconverted try was conceded….whilst racking up a half century of points….a fantastic day for our rugger buggers…. accolades must go to Lourens, Jaco and their committee and professional coaching staff…a wonderful day for Northerns rugby….long may it continue….
Our soccer boys had a day of mixed results….with the reserves going down 2-1 in a controversial loss, where there have been some objections raised about the standard of the refereeing…their coach is however happy that harsh lessons have been learned, which will hold them in good stead in the future….as an official complaint has been laid, I will not further comment and rather leave it to the authorities to settle and sort it out….The first side really kicked into gear this week and ran out with a solid 4-0 win…well done guys….no football fixtures this weekend due to the long weekend
The hockey season is in full swing for both the men and ladies leagues…it is wonderful to see so many players in the beer garden after the matches in true hockey player’s style enjoying recollecting the highs and lows of the matches over a beer with fellow mates and opposition alike… Our first and second sides both suffered losses this week….2nd’s going down 6-1 to Crusaders…while the 1st’s went down 2-1 to MCC…
There will be some great schools hockey on show at our Astro and at St Dunstans…as they host their Easter festival again this weekend…allied to the great hockey, rugby and netball will be played at the school too…whilst I am sure that the beer garden will hold its own special appeal to most of the spectators…join us there for a weekend of fun….
Friday night saw another new name emerge from the beeeeg black box….Mandy Cameron was selected this week….and her luck at being selected, unfortunately ended there…as her pick, when flipped over was the nine of diamonds….diamonds are supposed to be a girls best friend…..but not this time…so another card gone…we now only have 10 cards left….and Jackpot jumps up to R173 237…..we have the Easter weekend upon is….so due to this…we will have the joker draw a day early in an attempt to get everyone out on Thursday 18….a marvellous thought after a good party night at the North….we can sleep in…as Friday will only just have started when we wake ….great aspect….
Ryno and Freedom Unfound are back in the entertainment slot this week….I will guarantee that they won’t disappoint….Alan will fervently await their version of Lightning Crashes….and all of us will listen for Hotel California and some other great covers….
I saw that our one Toro mower returned to the fold this morning…after spending some time on the surgeon’s operating table…and will be back to full operation within a week…Brian said he needs some time to return all this missing parts and to just get everything back in perfect running order…really nice to have our mower team back to full strength again…
I wish everyone a peaceful and joyous long weekend….for those travelling, please drive carefully and look after yourselves…to those staying at home, have a blast wherever and whatever you find yourself doing….if you are at St Dunstans at all…I will probably see you there…
If there is anything that you believe needs my attention….please let me know by sending an mail to rod.scheepers@gmail.com ….That’s all for today…..hope you all have a awesome weekend and hopefully I will see you all soon at SDC…. Have a blast……Rod
Mandy Cameron (Guest) drew the Nine of Diamonds – Joker Draw a turnover at R173 237.00 for Thursday 18th April.
At a planning meeting, attended by all Sub Club Chairmen plus invited additional Sub Club Committee Members, held in 2018, it was agreed that we hold a R100 a ticket fund-raising drive to raise funds for fields and building maintenance. This initiative is being driven by Mark Hardman and your Sub Club Chairmen were all issued with books of tickets in 2018. We are currently faced with a repair bill of R45,000 for the big ride-on mower and a lessor amount of R15,000 for the smaller, older one that we use. Without these two machines, we will be unable to keep the grounds in the superb condition that they are currently in. Needless to say, we are receiving less and less support from Ekurhuleni and we can only assume that this will reduce further. Some of the other sporting facilities in Ekurhuleni bear testimony to this. Your urgent support in this venture is therefore requested. Your sub club chairman has the tickets – please ask him/her for them as we are planning to hold the first of 5 draws in May this year. Your support is and will be appreciated. Kindest regards, Laurence (Lockey) Brown – Benoni Northern Sports Club Chairman

Benoni Northerns Rugby had a very good start to the season against Sasolburg, having a clean sweep in winning all their games. Big thanks for the support on the day. See you on the 27th when they take on VUT at our home grounds.
