The Scimitar 26 Jun 2019
Good morning to you all from the “ice box”
Another week of the Cricket World Cup has passed and South Africa have only succeeded in ensuring that they have progressed no further in the league and are now firmly placed near the base of the log….no more said…..
And with the soccer AFCON starting recently….I was hoping that possibly our soccer prima donnas may be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat and start with a win….I think the cricketers have influenced their mind set and the loss to the Ivory Coast has meant that we have a mountain to climb in order to get make it to the qualifying stages….let us hope that the Springboks have a better showing a little later in the year….but after the cricketers, ladies at the soccer world cup and the boys now at AFCON….allowing that if the Boks were able win a couple of matches…. they will be significantly better off than all the others put together at this stage….seriously disappointing for myself and our sport mad and proud nation….I hope that we are able to address the fundamental problems and institute the necessary corrective measures…..should I hold my breath?…I will leave it for each individual reading this esteemed manual to decide….
Our Runners held their “Aches and Pains” party last Saturday at the Club…and as one of the chosen few mentioned to me….things got a little blurry towards the end of the evening….and my staff were able to confirm that bribery and corruption were indeed part of the deal as no names were revealed as being the masters of the plan to undermine the sobriety of an entire crew of attendees at the function…..a reliable source of mine did however reveal that evening was a roaring success and was filled with laughter and heckling with all the achievers and finishers being applauded and lauded…..well done on the completion of the epic race to all our runners and their support base…
Our rugger buggers had an astounding weekend…their first win over their arch rivals Nigel after many years of trying…thereby, ensuring their place in the play-offs is ensured…and barring some really crazy results, we should face Nigel in the final…admittedly probably at their home, which has proved to be a fortress in recent history…..but let that not detract from our boys weekend of success….the U21’s has an absolute runaway victory…with what resembles a cricket score 102-0 …. whilst the second side battled against some quality play going down 12-40….the first team had a nail biting affair….play moving from one side to the other….each side turning defence into attack and vice versa….with our boys eventually running our 30-22 winners….impeccable reports have stated that rugby celebrations were combined with the runners at the aches and pains party and were still seen revelling until almost sunrise on Sunday morning….well done boys…that is an amazing result and you deserved to celebrate this auspicious occasion…now that our boys have a couple of weeks off before the last round of fixtures where we will host Meyerton….we will need to work on tactics to overcome Meyerton to ready us for our play offs….let’s give our best for the last four weeks of hectic activity…
Our soccer boys had a the disappointment of having their match postponed for the weekend…their opposition being involved in a play-off and requesting another convenient to be agreed on to complete the clash….this week we take a trip to the south of Egoli to face Robertsham… a really tough prospect for both of our teams….the opposition hold the top position in the league before the matches begin…..so good luck fellows…give of your best and cause an upset…let us literally set the cat amongst the pigeons….
With all of the electrical problems throughout our area last week…we landed up with some Club headaches and had no electricity for extended periods….but these appear to have now being resolved…and we were eventually able to have our Joker draw and the “vrot kol” continued to reign in the selection process…. after Aliaster’s ticket being chosen last week…it moved three places to the right this week and Martin Iske had his ticket in the frame last Friday….and appeared quite relaxed and prepared as he approached the “spotlight”…after having posed his way through the happy snaps…..he confidently pointed to the card in the bottom left hand corner…and as Glenda slowly turned it over to reveal the Ace of Clubs, he smiled and said “next time”….this means another roll over and the pot moves up to R57989…..with month end this week..we are expecting a bumper crowd to arrive and we have our entertainers as Omega…a most popular 5 piece band that will be serenading the night away for us….we will also be having a promotion on Moonshine (a new shooter with a classic bootlegger background)….join us for a great start to this month end weekend….
After the Joker draw we have another draw in the guise of our 100 club….there will be 5 prizes of R5000 each available…tickets are still available and you may purchase these until the draw which will commence at 20h00 sharp…..so join us in what promises to an evening of festivity and celebration….hopefully I will see you there…..
Local hockey will be contested again this weekend…with the ladies and men swopping around….men completing their fixtures on Saturday, while the girls will be completing their matches on Sunday….but with this “turn around” party, I am sure there will still be a common thread….huge laughter and plenty of shrieks of mirth on both days….lots of fun everyone…..
The Pizza take away operation has been postponed by a couple of weeks as the curing process for the oven takes a little longer than we originally expected……so the naming process and prizes have also been delayed…. please chat to Kerryn King (or any of the executive committee…or even refer to our social media platforms too) regarding how to enter this competition and any other events and competitions that may be “on-the-go” at any point in time…
Lourens has assured us that the Caravan is almost ready to launch into “active service”….so keep a lookout for the “dop-trok” (for sake of a better name at the moment)…
That is about it for this week….hope you are all keeping warm and are joining us at the North for a “tipple or two”…Hope fully I will see you soon…Warm regards Rod
