A muggy good morning to all from a hot and humid office at the North
Some highlights of the week just passed….pre-season training for soccer and rugby….crushing victory for the Premier cricketers….flash floods….unexpected dam in the tent…..junior cricket about to commence…full-time mowing of the fields…training for the Comrades begins in earnest….Life Member misses his opportunity at the Joker Jackpot….
Let me start off with our weekend….it started in a brisk fashion with Adam Boyd from Boycott Ballad serenading us with his amazing renditions of popular songs and some wonderful new originals…I must say the his version of Hallelujah was epic…thanks Adam…. This week we introduce a new set of faces…their name is Black and Blue and they come highly recommended….so please come along to witness and welcome them to the North….they will be live from about 18h30 in the Scimitar or Patio (weather dependent)…
Shaun Taylor was considering himself as the luckiest man in the beer garden on Friday night….as his name was drawn in the Beer Raffle and he promptly won a case of Castle Lites…..he was still beaming from ear to ear….when to his surprise his name was the one selected from the beeeg black box for the Joker draw….. it seemed to be “old hat” for him as he has been up there in “hot seat” before…and he calmly waited for his photo to be “snapped” away…and then turned to the cabinet and quite nonchalantly pointed to his selection in the line below centre and watched in horror as Glenda revealed the Ace of Spades….so still no winner and now we are down to 22 face down cards….so the chances of revealing the joker, once again improves….and with a Jackpot now of R110 078…definitely worth a visit on Friday evening….at R5 a ticket, try your luck…it could just be your lucky day….see you there….
Some of our pre-season training has kicked off in earnest in the last little while, with rugby joining soccer with a fresh and early start…I think the coaches are wanting to make sure that their charges get rid of their festive season lethargy and are out there increasing their fitness levels….pushing their players to their limits…so don’t worry too much about bringing your playing boots…but rather some running shoes to improve your long term athletic prowess…
Speaking of athletic prowess…I see that our early morning school of runners seems to be growing…I get fortunate enough to meet them on a couple of mornings a week while they are busy building up their stamina and speed to achieve their own personal goals in the future….they are a great bunch of athletes…cheerful, happy and always with a ready chirp or comment to make you smile…thanks guys, keep it up…don’t ever lose sight of your own person targets and aims….
All the rain we have had, has resulted in our grounds staff having to put in extra effort to maintain the fields at an acceptable standard…Brian and his team have worked so hard over the last two years to get our grounds into top-class condition for which I personally thank them….most heart warming to see the fields are such getting back to their best after a really difficult set of weather patterns…heat waves interspersed with drought like conditions… followed by some devastating rain…. accompanied sometimes by hectic winds…and one of those winds made our tent billow up and one of the main tent supports fell over with nothing to support…. but some quick and efficient work by our Duty Manager and his bar staff…the inverted tent (which by now was now a mini dam) was emptied and the pole replaced with the minimum fuss and hassle…..so a massive tank you to Shepherd and his team….you make my life a lot easier with your level of commitment and endless energy…
Our cricketers on Sunday made short work of their opposition Kwa Thema….after winning the toss, Kurt sent the opposition in to bat…and their scorecard makes for sorry reading…only 3 players making double figures…with extras having the dubious honour of being second top scorer with 13…..coupled with 5 ducks in the Kwa Thema innings…the visitors lasted for 20 overs and were bundled out for just 66, Stefano picking up 4/19 and the other three bowlers bagging two wickets each for runs that were just into the teens ….. the top order made short work of the chase…which took just under 9 overs to complete….not without a couple of early scares though….our batting hero from the first half, Vaughn failing with the bat and Rian being unable trouble the scorers…so a comprehensive 8 wicket win…with a bonus point….still on top of the league….keep it up boys…let us keep that momentum going…this week we are at home again….and are hosting Duduza…everybody please come down to show your support in our quest to top the league….first ball on Sunday will be bowled at 10am…
Junior cricket practices and matches commence this week for the second half of the season onslaught….good luck to all of our teams….I hope that you are all well rested after your summer break and are ready for the intricacies, guile and psychological warfare that is played out on the fields…
Our baseballers are also busy again… with their respective leagues in both junior and senior formats continuing this weekend…good luck chaps….have a super second half of the season….
