The Scimitar 22 Jan 19
BNSC NEWSLETTER
A beautiful good morning from here at the North….
My view today is a perfect example of what a summers day should look like…. stunning green leafed Oak trees standing in a dwindling line down to the Tennis Club…flanked by green grassed verges…all framed by a sunshine filled blue sky… (okay, okay!!… the tarred car park doesn’t really add to the vision….but I will ignore that for the moment in order to fill my perfect picture….)
Our Friday started off as normal….juniors cricketers practicing and playing a match under lights….but a little rain put an early spanner in the works of that plan….and sent parents and kids alike under the cover of the Club house and of course the bars…where they were welcomed with open arms…..we were all sharing the Scimitar with a band debuting at the North, Black and Blue…and what a welcome addition they proved to be….a brilliant trio of musicians….with plenty of Members over the course of the evening being drawn to the Bar…like moths to a candle….to listen to this extremely easy listening bunch….so the good news is that Black and Blue will most definitely be on the recall list and will grace us all with their presence again….
As 7.30 approached …the tension began to build as the name was about to be drawn for the Joker Jackpot….and Members and their guests began to fill up the Main Bar….at the appointed time…I opened the beeeeg black box to search for a ticket that displayed the name to be looking for the Joker…and this week was a newbie….Pam Smit had a look of shock and surprise as her name was called….and then to the whoops and cheers from her table…she slowly edged forward to take her place at the cabinet….was a little flustered at having to have her photo taken before she was able to look at the cabinet…and then looked around for some assistance as to where she should point out….she eventually took the bull by the horns and indicated her selection…and Glenda slowly revealed the……..seven of hearts…..shouts of glee and some spontaneous applause from the surrounding crowd indicated their happiness at the prospect that the jackpot would still be available for them next week….and with a growing Jackpot to now reach the level of R114 494….and with 31 cards already turned face up…means that your chances of finding the Joker have improved once again…. please come and join us this week to begin your weekend on a happy and relaxed foot…it is pay day Friday…and at only R5 a ticket you can afford to improve your chances of being selected by taking a bunch of tickets….January has been a really long month….(heard a great description of the current month…..January is like 31 Mondays in a row….thought it was most apt)….so with pay day approaching it means that the end is in sight…..and we have Eben entertaining us…he is an amazing musician and returns as he extremely popular with our Members….come along and make an evening of it….
I have seen quite a lot of activity on the fields in the evenings….as pre-season begins to gain momentum and the interest is piqued at the prospect of the new teams and friends…Soccer begins their Super 8 competition early in February….so it is almost time to commence the action part of the year…Rugby has a little longer to go before their first matches kick-off….but there appears to be a good turn out and some new players joining our ranks as we head into an exciting season for our “rugga bugga’s”….keep those heads up fellows….fitness is a critical part of any sport…the fitter you are personally….the more options you offer the team and the coach….so get out there and get fit….
This week the other half of Benoni will be filled with runners….as the Johnson Marathon takes place….I wish all our athletes well, I hope that your legs are swift and your mind is strong ….this is usually a good indicator of current fitness and stamina levels….for all those not taking part…please take note of the road closures and diversions that will occur for most of Sunday morning…. please keep a those participating in your thoughts….the early weather forecast gives a cooler day….but these have been known to be fairly inaccurate in the past….
Another easy victory for our Premier cricket side on Sunday…. with the result achieved within 65 overs of the scheduled 100….Kurt Francis again had the fortune of winning the toss and send Duduza in to bat…..and albeit with some slow batting they made steady progress…but lost wickets at regular intervals to end up with a total of 140 after just short of 42 overs….three of our bowlers enjoying similar success, with Joshua, Leonard and Phumelelo sharing nine wickets between them equally….well bowled chaps….to chase the target appeared to be a bit of a breeze for our top three…an opening stand of 94 between Renier and Kyle setting a solid platform, before Kyle lost his wicket for 42 (50), Rian then continued the onslaught….and the target was achieved in the 22nd over…Renier achieving his half century 55(57) and Rian 32 (28)…another bonus point victory which consolidates our position at the helm of the log….one more game left for us against Bedfordview away on Sunday….. All the best boys, give your best, we really need the win this to ensure our top ranking….. we are currently six points ahead of our closest rivals, but still need the win to ensure that we are in control of our playoff place…..third placed Alberton (who are seven points behind us) still have two games to play of which one is against fourth placed Kempton….and that will clear up that portion of the playoff places….I am certain that the boys would really love to have some support…so if you have some spare time on Sunday…please go along to watch them…it will be greatly appreciated….

Cheers…take care
