A very good morning to all
Another week has disappeared…meaning we are one week closer to a magical time of the year….the period that I always look forward to is the Christmas break…..summer weather…and everyone appears to be in a good mood….everybody has a little more time for their fellow human beings….most people are able to take a little break from work…and their frame of mind is relaxed….the general feeling of well being and fellowship is prevalent…I really love this time of the year….stress seems to be packed away and left at work…(why can’t we do this more often?)…. Kids are uber excited at the prospect of Father Christmas bringing something special for their Christmas stocking…. but enough dreaming for today…back to reality….
This weekend was a busy one at the Club on so many different levels….normal Friday fare, cricket played over the whole weekend, Athletics year end function…and then the busy and noisy event from Sunday, the ToyRun….
Friday night greeted the return of the Zimmer Twinz…these two muso’s are like a real quality vintage red wine…they seem to improve each time they join us…this week they brought along guest artist….with the voice of a nightingale, a cross between Stevie Nicks and Blondie and everything in between….thanks guys…your new vocalist is a gem…she can join us anytime you can bring her along…..the patrons in the Scimitar were astounded at her amazing talent….the Members draw in the Main Bar again produced no winners….whilst the raffle had the staff happy…as Victor won the beer draw….but again everyone was awaiting the Joker draw….apparently Emma and Adele didn’t care much for selling the tickets….but Andy and Rae slipped into the breach and manfully withstood the “Black Friday” ticket sale rush….as the beeeeg black box was brought to the fore…and was opened to start the selection of the new Joker winner candidate……and the name this week was a new one……Clint Maxwell…who likes to be known as Max….was the lucky person….and he appeared a bit bewildered at the prospect of having to complete his choice….but he eventually settled down, with the stars in his eyes after having his photo taken…[smile…flash..smile…flash….smile…flash..] and then decided that he would choose in the centre of the board….a little down to the right from dead centre and the normal hush as the crowd awaits…whether to groan in disappointment…or to cheer in glee…… Glenda pushed the envelope of waiting a little longer for everyone……and then she turned his selection over to reveal the two of diamonds…..and the gleeful shouts emanated from the surrounding crowd….as we have another week for everyone to have their opportunity at being our next big winner….this week the Jackpot has risen to R95313…and as we approach the magical 6 figure Jackpot…everyone is fervently awaiting their chance of being drawn….at only R5 a ticket, there is a fantastic chance at being drawn as the next candidate to reveal where the Joker is hiding away…we are now in week 27, which means that we are almost half way….27 cards are still face down, but after this week, the number of cards face up will outnumber the face down ones….for our entertainment this Friday, we have the father and son duo of the Wilsons…who don’t like taking a break whilst they are performing…so it is literally non-stop music…their only breaks are for our draw dictated times of 7 and 7.30…..come along and have an evening of fun with us…..
The top performing Athletes from the Club were honoured at their year-end function in the Hall on Saturday night…it was fantastic hearing about all the achievements of these talented individuals….in the various forms of the sport offered at the Club….trail running, marathon, iron man…the list seems endless of the variants that are available these days…. Congratulations to all the winners of the various categories offered…..it was a great evening…and I have it on good authority that some of the party revellers decided to walk across the road after the party to assist with the Toy Run organisation…so a leeeeetle bit of a late evening……
And onto Sunday…..the Toy Run is an amazing day…..the amount of commitment given to this event is amazing…I love the mass arrival of all the “boneys” as they used to be known in my day…the “seeing is believing” sights of the car park…..piles and piles of toys in the collection areas…..the booming music coming from the gig rig…. the chirps and comments from the beer tent….. I personally would like to thank a few people….to our Club President…thanks for your tireless efforts, it is greatly appreciated by the Members and staff of the North…. to Peter Beart (Toy Run organiser in chief) you are a true squire and gentleman….nothing ever seems to phase you… whatever situation you get placed in, you handle it with the utmost aplomb….to all the Northerns volunteers…a massive thank you for all your efforts…you always put in a massive effort in ensuring that all the bikers remain well hydrated…thank you…. special mention must be made of the Venners (Bryan and Liz) who always make the annual trek from Cape Town to come and assist behind the bar…..superb efforts, thank you guys…..and of course my staff, who put in long hours every year to make sure that everything runs smoothly…thanks everyone….
While we were busy with the Toy Run…our Premier league cricketers were locking horns with United Cricket Club….after we won the toss and sent the opposition in to bat…..things appeared to be going along pretty well at 127/5 before a major collapse ….saw them bundled out for 138 after a few deliveries short of 38 overs….Northerns climbed into the target attempt pretty quickly and they chased down the total with ease…getting over the line after only a couple of balls into the 16th over….with Vaughan Humphreys top scoring with 76 from 52 balls….well batted sir…. you are enjoying a rich vein of form at the moment, long may it continue….this week our boys travel to Boksburg…..all the best…let us keep the momentum going….
If you think we’re doing things right (or getting it wrong) please let me know on my email rod.scheepers@gmail.com
Have a great week….hope to see you all soon\
Take care

Well done to Andre Bredenkamp who was the 10km Grandmaster winner at the inaugural Voortrekker Monument Road Race on Saturday, 24th November 2018
Pretty chuffed to have won the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club’s Most Improved Runner for 2018 Award last night. Such a surprise as I’m usually the one taking photos of the award winners. This sport has done the most remarkable things for me and I am eternally grateful to everybody at BNAC for all the support, advice, laughs and company on the many runs. 🧀🍅“One foot in front of the other”. 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏆🏆🏆 – LOGAN GREEN
