Former South Africa and Transvaal ‘Mean Machine’ spin bowler Clive Eksteen was a popular guest of honour at Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s annual senior awards evening last Saturday (May 5).
Eksteen, who played in seven Test matches and six one-day internationals for the Proteas, captained Transvaal for three seasons during his 16 years with the province.
The 45-year-old fondly remembered playing a few games at Benoni Northerns during his army days and said he was impressed with the current facilities, which the club prides itself on. “It’s really special to see such a great turn-out here tonight and to see that Northerns is still going so strongly,” Eksteen enthused.

Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s Premier League XI needed all the inspiration they could get to advance to the semi-finals of the Easterns Pro20 competition on Sunday (March 4). And a large chunk of it came in a pre-match pep-talk by Easterns’ new director of club cricket Mark Kingham.
Invited to the club by BNCC chairman Gavin Rademeyer to present special caps to three Premier team players, Kingham, who has strong links with Northerns, fired up the squad for what was to later be a tough match against Kempton Park’s Promotion League XI.
